Minnesota’s spring count of ruffed grouse dips, expectedly

The 2025 statewide population index of Minnesota’s most iconic game bird – the ruffed grouse – is lower than last year, according to the results of the Minnesota DNR’s annual spring survey.
Ruffed grouse drumming counts were 1.8 statewide, down from 2.3 drums per stop last year. The drop was not unexpected, DNR officials say, because 2024 was the highest 10-year cycle population peak for ruffed grouse since 1972.

Mill Creek boosted by channel cat, muskie stockings in eastern Illinois

The effort to thin out Mill Creek Lake’s bass population in order to boost size structure in the species appears to be working – even if gradually so.
There have been no recent sampling reports on the lake, but late-summer fishing tournaments held on Mill Creek in 2024 revealed a number of larger bass being boated.

Value of Illinois’ hunting land remains very strong

Recreational land values remain exceptionally strong in the state, according to the Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraiser.
A recent Trends Report by that organization put the total value per acre of recreational land in the western region of Illinois at $6,600 per acre for 2024. That’s a 10% increase from the previous year.
