Wisconsin’s spring waterfowl survey shows positive results

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that data is now available from the annual spring survey of breeding waterfowl. The survey indicated stable population numbers and habitat conditions for migratory birds.
The data from this survey is used as part of the overall survey of breeding waterfowl in North America, and the information helps the DNR make management decisions about waterfowl in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s recent trend in rooster numbers best in years

Spring surveys showed an increasing trend for pheasants, especially in northwest Wisconsin.
Chris Pollentier, DNR research scientist, reported at the July 1 meeting of the DNR Pheasant Advisory Committee, that pheasant observations were above the five-year average for the second consecutive year.
“This last year the pheasant survey results were well above what we’ve seen in recent years,” Pollentier said. “This was the highest we’ve seen since we revamped the survey in 2013.”

Joint Finance Committee eliminates hunting, fishing license fee hikes in Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s hunters, trappers, and anglers will likely have mixed reactions to the new state budget that was hurriedly put together by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee (JFC) and signed by Gov. Tony Evers on July 3.
Quick action and signing were necessary for the state to receive more than $1 billion in federal Medicaid that would have been lost if the state budget were signed after the new federal budget was signed the following day. In Wisconsin’s new budget, outdoor enthusiasts did not get a requested increase in fees for hunting, trapping and fishing licenses, nor did they get a continuation of the Knowles/Nelson Stewardship Program.

Nothing says fall is coming like hunting and trapping licenses going on sale, which occurs in early August. Hunters can also can begin applying for deer management permits. This year, however, things could look a bit different.
Crossbow legislation passed earlier this summer by the state legislature awaits the signature of Gov. Kathy Hochul. If signed into law, it will likely mean expanded hunting opportunities for the fall archery seasons. At press time, the bill had yet to be delivered by the Senate to the governor.
