A pup’s good joint health is a life-long commitment

The arthritis in the front right elbow of my late black Lab developed slowly, then seemingly all at once.
Buddy was nearly 9 years old, a seasoned waterfowl and upland hunter with countless days afield and dozens of retrieves and flushes on his resume. But his steady limp shook me to my core – and out of my denial. His new normal required me to think anew about how I was going to care for my beloved animal as he entered the winter of his life. The signs of his physical decline were, suddenly, everywhere.

When the river gets high and muddy, go catfishing

I watched Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill River rise from a frisky bulldog flow to something definitely flooded and unfishable.
At first the water carried a slight tinge, like a weak cup of coffee with a little cream and sugar, but gradually it churned into a deep brown, seemingly solid mass of tumbling froth. With an elevated input some 50 miles upstream it took but two hours to make this conversion.

August is prime time for salmon on Lake Michigan; here’s where to target them

August is prime time for salmon on the Great Lakes. Both kings and cohos begin homing in on ports where they were stocked years earlier or staging off river mouths where they were naturally reproduced.
Between the plants made at Ludington, Manistee, and Frankfort and the salmon produced in the Pere Marquette, Little and Big Manistee, and Betsie rivers, these three ports are the top ports on Lake Michigan, if not in the entire Great Lakes.

Catching flatheads — the venerable king of the catfish

Common folklore says you can only catch flathead catfish on live bait. True, flatheads love live bait, but many are caught on cut bait and artificial lures.
Another tale is you must fish at night. Good advice, too, flatheads start hunting prey at night, as do the other catfish species. During the day, though, if you bop one in the head with a tasty offering, chances are in your favor, you are going to get bit. A predator is a predator, after all.

Outdoor Insights: Shining some light on the ‘Make America Beautiful Again Commission’

In the middle of public lands and roadless rules debates, another announcement slipped past the nation’s outdoors media earlier this month. On Thursday, July 3, the Trump administration issued an executive order establishing a Make America Beautiful Again Commission.
Here’s its stated purpose:
