Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka AIS treatment gets mucky

As the Lake Minnetonka lake association and resident-managed lake improvement districts consider annual aquatic invasive vegetation treatment – and streamlining the process – in the west-metro lake’s Harrison Bay, debate has ignited among other lake recreators and residents.
“They’re kind of nuking these bays, and Harrison Bay is a prime example. … They’ve been doing that for three or four years now and there is literally no weeds in that bay, there is very little fish in that bay now,” said Brett Pioske, Lake Minnetonka fishing guide and co-owner of REL Fishing.

What does the new federal spending law mean for conservation?

After months of negotiations and sometimes-bitter infighting within his own party, President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025 signed into law a massive spending and tax bill that includes funding for a popular walk-in access program and sets the table for future farmland conservation measures.
The nearly 1,000-page bill, which the White House dubbed the “One, Big Beautiful Bill” Act, spends trillions on tax cuts, border enforcement, and national defense. But the bill also has provisions for habitat and hunter access, which some conservation group officials characterized as good news for sportsmen and women.

Trout stocking policy on New York’s Irondequoit Creek raises questions, concerns

A new stocking policy for Irondequoit Creek, in Monroe County, N.Y., is raising the ire of many local fishermen – but not all of them. Starting in 2026, Irondequoit Creek will no longer be stocked with brown trout by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
In a background statement from the agency, Irondequoit Creek is a 36-mile-long tributary to Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario and DEC recognizes its popularity as a fishing destination for anglers of all levels.

Illinois DNR’s fiscal year for monitoring CWD in deer herd ends

DNR’s annual CWD Deer Report is not due to be released until later this summer – it is based on the fiscal year that just ended June 30 – but there is plenty of anticipation following the addition of four new counties to the Illinois CWD list this spring and a new 5-year pilot program launched this year.
Meanwhile, the federal government appears ready to provide funding for the fight against the disease.
