Erie, Pa. — Former New York Outdoor News associate editor and ongoing contributing writer Paula Piatt received a number of accolades this past spring.
Having recently retired as the executive director of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association, the organization recognized Piatt at its spring conference held in Erie, Pa., in May. Piatt and her husband, and retired NYON Editor Steve Piatt live in Sayre. She served as POWA’s director from 2018 until March of this year.
POWA President Grey Berrier II presented her with a commemorative plaque in appreciation for her “outstanding dedication, hard work and leadership in advancing the mission and vision of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association as executive director.”

POWA’s board of directors also provided Piatt with a celebratory bird hunt at Martz’s Gap View Hunting Preserve in Dalmatia, Pa.
In her last report to membership, she wrote, “It has been a privilege to work alongside the officers, the boards and the membership of POWA through the years. I hope I have helped moved the organization along toward its next 75 years and am confident that POWA will remain the best outdoor media organization in the country.”
Piatt has been a member of POWA since 2010. Her husband Steve is also a member of the organization. Both are still active outdoor communicators, including with Outdoor News publications.
POWA will celebrate its 75th anniversary next May in Camp Hill, Pa., not far from where the organization was founded in 1950.
Paula Piatt was also honored by the Dog Writers Association of America for the second consecutive year for a column which appeared in Just Labs magazine. She won first place in the “Recurring Column” category for a piece titled, “L(ab) OL,” which was published in the magazine’s January-February issue.
The award was presented at the association’s annual awards banquet, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City. The banquet was held in conjunction with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden.
