Part one of Ernest Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River”

Editor’s note: For subscribers searching for some leisurely reading during the long days of summer, Outdoor News is reprinting a seminal piece of American literature. Ernest Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River” marks its centennial in 2025, and this publication will print the lengthy story in four parts over our next several issues.

Problem bear complaints higher in Michigan’s U.P. this spring

An adult male black bear estimated to weigh at least 300 pounds, based on the size of its tracks, killed five sheep last month and injured a sixth one so badly it had to be dispatched. The sheep were owned by Angel Kleiman from Powers in Menominee County, Mich., about 23 miles west of Escanaba.
About a week before the sheep were killed, a bear broke into a chicken coop on another farm 2-½ miles away and killed eight hens and eight guinea fowl.

Ryan Rothstein: Looking to burn? Here’s what you need to know

In my May 30 column, I made the case for fire being a critically underutilized tool when it comes to whitetail habitat management, particularly on private lands.
While I laid out why burning is a good thing, I didn’t get into the nitty gritty of putting fire on the ground. That’s where this week’s column comes in. Here’s what you need to know if such a fire is in your future.

Wisconsin Wardens are Work: Ben Mott works public/private land conflict in Waushara County

A private landowner and deer hunter was impressed when a Wisconsin DNR game warden, Ben Mott in Waushara County, took the time to work through an incident during the 2024 gun deer season.
Mott grew up in nearby Marquette County, went to UW-Stevens Point, and was first stationed in Milwaukee County 15 years ago. Two years later he transferred to Waushara County, where he has been the past 13 years.
“Two other wardens share tiny portions of Waushara County, but the rest is my district,” Mott said.

Reload your own straight-wall cartridges

It has been said that straight-walled cartridges can be a challenge to reload. I have experienced no reason to feel this way. I enjoy reloading them more than shouldered cartridges.
For those willing to try, the equipment and information on how to reload is better than ever. Most of the information is reliable. Some believe case lubrication is no longer necessary, not with the newer dies made of carbide or titanium nitride. I caution against this.

Oak Duke: Desperately seeking the right trout water

Nothing quite like the feeling of having a good fish on.
But was it a fluke?, No pun intended. Who wants to catch just one fish? Sometimes trout will hit a fly, we mumble, “Ahh, got it solved. So that’s what they want.”
Sorry. But it was a one-off. An anomaly. An outlier. We need a second, or even a third fish, fooled with the same pattern to well, cinch it.

Steve Sarley: We all started with live bait; some of us still tinker

I started fishing with live bait. Didn’t we all? I recall picking fat, wiggly nightcrawlers off of my family’s driveway after a rain.
Nothing better than free bait for a young fisherman, is there? Recent developments in plastics fishing have changed my life. The use of “wacky worms” and the use of “drop shots” have revolutionized fishing for me.
