Legacy of Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair in Illinois? Teaching kids to fish, enjoy nature

For 36 years, the Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair at Pere Marquette State Park in Illinois has been a cornerstone of outdoor education and recreation, bringing together families, volunteers, and organizations in a celebration of fishing and conservation.
This year’s fair was held June 7 at the park, which is near Grafton on Illinois 100.

Cameras placed at sites in Illinois and Indiana to study muskrats — ‘eco engineers’

Did you know muskrats may be natural conservationists by creating bird habitat through building their homes? Since 2021, I’ve been working closely with conservation partners at Audubon Great Lakes to better understand how muskrats influence Illinois and Indiana wetlands and how birds are better off because of it.
This was all part of a research project I initiated as a PhD student and am continuing as a postdoctoral researcher with the University of Chicago. Muskrats have long been labeled as an ecosystem engineer, but I was curious to dig in more to learn exactly what benefits they might provide to other animals.

I just wanted to scream the other day as I drove along several of our county roads.

Commentary: Big-game hunting a healthy flywheel in economic engine

Fishing, boating, birding, and hunting in the United States, each by themselves, are an economic powerhouse for the American people.
All these outdoor pursuits are enjoyed by millions over a broad range of household incomes and ages and other demographic characteristics. This is known thanks to the 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation shepherded by economists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
