Looking at the current status of bighorn sheep in North Dakota

Big-game biologist Brett Weidmann is the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s bighorn sheep guru and has forgotten more about bighorn sheep than most will ever know.
While Weidmann spends his share of time behind the screen and in the office, his work puts him into the old-fashioned role of a biologist. Monitoring, studying, researching and learning about one of North Dakota’s smallest populations but highest interest species.
Here’s what we do know about the 2025 status of bighorn sheep in North Dakota.

Pennsylvania angler catches huge spotted muskie in Lake Erie

Although it was a little belated, an Erie County, Pa., man boated the birthday gift of his dreams when he caught a monster muskie on Lake Erie May 25.
Scott Bielanin, of Harborcreek, caught a 42-pound, 53-½-inch spotted muskie – an original Great Lakes strain – while targeting walleyes in the shallows near North East. It came four days after he turned 52.

Flop of a fishing trip becomes quest for Lucky ‘Stones’ from a sheephead

I recently renewed an old childhood tradition of fishing the white bass spawning run in central Wisconsin.
Picture it: You’ve got Lake Winnebago, which is about the size of Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs, plus three adjoining lakes that are no slouches either. Then, all the adult white bass from these lakes cram into the Wolf River for their spawning run. Talk about concentrated fish!

Patrick Durkin: Fishing’s rituals, routines build friendships

I only like to go fishing when I’m alone or with somebody. But I’d rather fish alone than go with just anybody.
After all, few situations are more boring or annoying than being confined to a fishing boat with someone if your only shared interest is fishing. That’s especially true on big water when far from shore with little action and few boats or other sights to distract you when the action slows.

Minnesota DNR completes spring waterfowl survey amid tough conditions

When Minnesota DNR officials fly the annual spring waterfowl breeding population survey – one of the state’s longest-running wildlife inventories – it rarely goes off without a hitch.
This spring was no different.
“We had a little turbulence, you could say, but we finally got it finished,” said Bruce Davis, supervisor for the Minnesota DNR’s Wetland Wildlife Populations and Research Group in Bemidji, who flew this year’s survey.

Culling of cormorants continues in Ohio

In Ohio, sites deemed necessary for management culls of double-crested cormorants in the past have included West Sister and Green islands in Lake Erie, Turning Point Island in Sandusky Bay, the Portage Lakes in northeast Ohio, Grand Lake, and the St. Marys State Fish Hatchery.
On the Lake Erie islands, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-issued public resources depredation order requires birds to be culled prior to their nesting season.
