Provision to allow copper-nickel mining near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters pulled from House

On Tuesday evening, June 10, advocates for protecting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness applauded the removal of a provision (Section 80131) from the U.S. House Reconciliation Bill that would have opened up the Rainy River watershed surrounding the wilderness to sulfide-ore copper mining.
“Today marks a victory in our fight to protect the Boundary Waters,” said Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., in a press release issued by the Save the Boundary Waters organization.

Illinois’ Citizens Lake in Warren County in steady recovery, hybrid crappies in DNR spotlight

Two hybrid crappies and eight black crappies were collected by Illinois DNR in its 2024 fall survey of Citizens Lake. Meanwhile, the agency stocked 500 hybrids from the Banner Marsh Rearing Ponds in late October.
Indeed, the crappie experiment at the Warren County lake is very much alive.

Steve Carney: A good friend’s close call, and switch to ‘hatchet’ hook pays off

A good friend of mine from high school has been coming to Minnesota to fish with me for more than 20 years. Last week, he was on a plane, coming from his home in Houston to Minneapolis, when he came down with sepsis, a potentially fatal blood infection.

Minnesota DNR’s latest draft of state Wildlife Management Area plan sees movement, again

Two years after DNR Roundtable discussions and some movement on drafting a statewide wildlife and aquatic management area plan, the agency remains somewhat where it was in the fall of 2023.
“Right now, we’re working with leadership to get together with our partners. We’re going to be engaging, again, internally, asking our staff what they want to see of this WMA/AMA system plan,” said Dave Trauba, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife section manager.
After gathering that input, Trauba said they’ll ask the same of external partners.
