It’s happening now in fields and forests near you.
Whitetail fawns, cute as can be, are being born. If you are lucky enough to find one a few days old or less, it will lie motionless on the forest floor, its spotted coat well-camouflage (in most cases) against the leafy background. Usually, a doe will be nowhere in sight, but she is nearby. In the first days of a fawn’s life, the doe only visits a few times per day to nurse it.

Fans of the coho salmon, original 1960s poster child of a new Great Lakes sport fishery, are hoping for a repeat of last year’s banner fishing year.
Count me among those hopeful fans. I love cohos. See me in the photo taken on a Lake Michigan pier last month, smiling and showing off a couple-pound coho that’s astonishingly silver? It’s no wonder that while Chinook salmon are called “kings,” Northwest salmon anglers have called coho “silver” salmon.

A two-wheeled journey on a gently winding paved road was nearing an end. Within a few miles, I’d be pushing the bars of a Kawasaki KLR650 to veer from asphalt onto a path less traveled.
Views of small-town USA with a mix of scenic semi-rural township roads would soon transition to pure dirt and gravel, green pastures, and the scent of freshly tilled acreage perfectly blended with the warming spring air. Kenda dual-sport tires confidently gripped the imperfect surface of that final turn.

Higher water is rarely a problem when using live bait for summer saugeyes. Using artificials may pose more of a challenge. Crankbaits can sometimes save the day, but not always. My challenge begins with where to find saugeyes, given the weather and water conditions that day.
They will feed, given the chance, to make up for the days spent navigating the higher flow. I go after the peak, when water starts settling down.

Perhaps the biggest question a muskie angler faces each morning is which lake he should fish. Certainly he should consider the lakes that have been producing for him lately, as well as where he historically has success during the current water temperature.
But the most important factor is the color of the water of the lakes being considered.
Clear or dark water for muskies today? Here’s how to choose Read More »
