Steve Sarley: A look below the surface of creative topwater fishing

I’d like to dive a little deeper into the subject of topwater fishing. That’s quite an anomaly, isn’t it? Deeper? Topwater? Ha!
To be honest, I never was a believer in fishing lures on the surface. I looked at topwater lures and couldn’t figure out what they were supposed to look like. It was about 15 years ago when I received a call from Jim Crowley, the well-known pro fisherman and educator from central Illinois.

Ohio’s waterfowl zones could be changed starting in 2026

Input from hunters and results of late fall waterfowl surveys prompted the Ohio DNR’s wildlife division to propose new waterfowl hunting zones for the 2026 to 2030 seasons.
The proposed zone changes will not affect the upcoming 2025-26 duck and goose season, according to an agency press release. Mike Ervin, wildlife biology program administrator for the Division of Wildlife, said federal regulations allow the state to re-zone every five years.

Minnesota Becoming an Outdoors Woman committee member hits ‘Great Lakes slam’

Growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Jennifer Dums’ first taste of fishing the Great Lakes started young with Lake Superior practically in her backyard.
“I’ve been fishing since I was a little kid. My dad used to take me fishing, and I grew up in the U.P. of Michigan basically on Lake Superior … so I’ve always been around the Great Lakes in that respect,” Dums said.
In that region, being outdoors hunting and fishing is intrinsically tied to the way of life she has began imparting on others through her work.

Avoid these four common mistakes to become a better shooter in the moment of truth

We all know what to do. Identify legal game, aim, squeeze, tag, drag, skin, eat.
Yet we also know that things often fall apart after the “Identify legal game” part. We shake, we fumble, we can’t find the safety, we aim too high or low, we jerk the trigger. (Sometimes we even forget our tag!) I can’t help you with your tag, but as an old veteran of some 58 hunting seasons, I can offer some advice on four shooting mistakes to avoid.

Dan Ladd: Ready to take advantage of New York’s camping, trout and bass fishing

For this hunter/angler summer begins June 1. Not because I somewhat follow the meteorological calendar, but because once the spring turkey season is over I pretty much go into summer mode. And that means camping, some last minute brook trout fishing and eventually bass fishing.
