For the first time in three years, the Minnesota DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program, in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey, banded the young eagles that the agency has monitored through the winter and spring. Banding is the process of placing tags on young eagles’ legs to identify where they came from and approximate date of birth.
“Even though we were not able to watch them on camera this year, we decided we would band them because banding is very important for following bald eagles, and other birds,” said Lori Naumann, the information officer for the DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program.

Starting July 1, 2025, some young adults and youth who operate watercraft in Minnesota will need to possess a valid watercraft operator’s permit – a boating license – as required by a 2023 state statute.
This July deadline will not apply to every motorboat or personal watercraft operator in Minnesota. For the July 1, 2025, deadline, people who must possess the valid permit are those 12 years old up to those born after June 30, 2004. So anyone who turns 21 after June 30, 2025 and younger will need the permit. Minnesotans older than that will not need the permit, yet.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ plan to euthanize nuisance geese is on pause following backlash from the public and lawmakers.
“One of the Wildlife Division’s objectives is to develop, recommend, and implement policies and regulations to manage wildlife and human-wildlife interactions,” DNR Director Scott Bowen wrote in a May 9 letter to Sen Dayna Polehanki, D-Livonia. “We have been working with the public to resolve human-goose conflicts for over 40 years, and our attempt to implement this pilot program was an additional effort to further that goal.”

After rebounding in recent decades due to conservation efforts, the number of once-imperiled peregrine falcons in the U.S. has been dropping again in some places due to the bird flu that has decimated other avian populations in recent years.
Although falcons in coastal parts of the country have been hit hard, researchers say others that set up camp in some of the country’s biggest cities appear to be thriving, showing the world’s fastest bird has acclimated to living among people. They’re also amassing fans, as legions of devotees follow along on webcams each spring as the falcons progress from hatching to leaving the nest.

Pennsylvania bowhunters, for the first time in recorded history, tagged more bucks last season than firearms hunters.
And a substantial majority of those bowhunter-killed bucks were shot with crossbows. This turnaround has some Pennsylvania bowhunters wondering on social media platforms: Is there a danger of the archery deer season here being cut?
