Northeast Minnesota deer study meant to help set regs enters year two of three

Researchers are almost a month away from starting the second year of a three-year study that should help DNR wildlife managers in northeastern Minnesota get a better understanding of deer densities and, in turn, be better equipped to set regulations accordingly.
Eric Michel, a former lead researcher with the DNR, headed the project in its first year, but Michel has since taken a new job at Mississippi State University with the MSU Deer Lab. The study is now a collaborative effort between MSU and the Minnesota DNR, with MSU graduate student Parker Kreie helping to conduct the research and analyze the data.

Game birds entering critical period when weather, habitat conditions dictate future hunter success

As a dyed-in-the-wool pheasant, ruffed grouse, and quail hunter, Bob St. Pierre admits he pretty much has “bird on the brain” year-round.
As are other serious bird hunters, St. Pierre constantly monitors the weather and thinks about the welfare of the species he loves. That’s especially true during the winter and the current window of time that biologists call the spring nesting and summer brood-rearing season.

Ralph Loos: Biologists play important role in Illinois fish sampling, but it’s the fish that steal the show

Our printing press had barely spit out the May 2 front page of Illinois Outdoor News that included a story about biologists unrolling nets and charging up electrofishing gear when a news tip came crashing down on my desk.
And by “crashing down,” I mean I dropped an entire mug of coffee over my keyboard trying to read a curious email that began, “Dear Editor, since it’s obvious you are enamored with fish sampling . . .”
Uh, enamored seems a bit exaggerated.

Volunteers with Wisconsin’s Rock Creek Disabled Outdoors build friendships through helping others hunt

Over the course of more than a quarter century, hundreds of disabled persons have experienced the thrill of the hunt thanks to a non-profit based in the rural hamlet of Willard in Clark County, Wis. Many have thanked the volunteers who make it happen, but there is one expression of gratitude that still rings in the ears of Molly Luther, who has volunteered for Rock Creek Disabled Outdoors for 12 years and now serves as its secretary:
“Thank you for treating us like people,” the man said.

Master minnowbaits for better muskie fishing

As I rummaged through my tackle box trying to figure out which lure may get the muskies to bite, my fishing partner John Stellflue stopped casting and turned my way.
“You know you’re going to use that orange minnowbait anyway,” he said from the bow. “Why don’t you just get it over with?”
Following Stellflue’s suggestion, I snapped the lure to the leader. An hour later as I released my third muskie, I thanked him for the recommendation.

New York archery coach has a penchant for teaching winners

As the old saying goes “Those who can – do. Those who can’t – teach.”
Gary Neal figured out a way to excel at both after he picked up a bow and arrow, becoming first a successful competition archer, and then a sought-after coach. Several of Neal’s students have thrived under his guidance as well, and Neal’s prowess is recognized at the national level.
