Rattlesnake survey serves as officer training for Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission recently conducted a timber rattlesnake survey in an undisclosed part of Clearfield County.
The location of the survey is kept a secret to protect timber rattlesnakes from unlawful activity including poaching. The known breeding habitat is a rocky portion of forest that is visited once annually by the agency’s biologists to monitor the abundant population of the native species of venomous snakes.

Steve Piatt: A little competition in the turkey woods doesn’t have to ruin an experience

His name was Mike.
He lived around Harrisburg in downstate Pennsylvania. Worked at the Nestle’s water plant in that area. That’s about all I knew about him. Well, that’s not entirely correct.
I knew that, like me, he was a serious turkey hunter. And we were hunting the same farm, at least for the first week of Pennsylvania’s spring gobbler season, when Mike would take some vacation time and come up to pursue longbeards with the same intensity as myself.

Commentary: Bipartisan bill aims to extend critical national park maintenance funding

The National Parks Conservation Association on May 1 celebrated the reintroduction of a bill to extend critical maintenance funding for national parks and public lands across the country.
The America the Beautiful Act was reintroduced by U.S. Sens. Steve Daines, a Montana Republican, Angus King, an Independent from Maine, North Dakota Republican Kevin Cramer, and Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, and would provide an additional $11.2 billion over eight years to address our parks’ crumbling roads, decaying buildings, outdated drinking and wastewater systems, and many more critical repair needs.

Steve Sarley: Adrenaline rush from strike on a topwater lure is unmatched

People often debate the subject of what is the most exciting way to catch a fish.
I know what method I think is most exciting. I caught my first muskie while retrieving my lure in a figure-eight pattern right at the side of the boat. It was a good fish, just shy of 40 inches. I remember seeing it coming after my lure on a straight retrieve and it following as I pulled my Mepp’s Musky Killer into the traditional figure eight.
