CWD cases escaping the disease’s ‘hot zone’ in Illinois

A deer taken this past season by a hunter in Adams County that later tested positive for CWD has greatly loosened what had been a tightly contained disease “hot zone” in northern Illinois.
If you consider the CWD deer found in the middle of Bureau County last year as the furthest south positive case, then the Adams County deer would be roughly 170 miles even further south. A previous positive case in southern Livingston County would be roughly the same distance.

Ely, Grand Marais ranger stations in Minnesota redirect Boundary Waters permitting

In late-April, people who already planned to pick up their Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness permits from two ranger stations in Ely and Grand Marais received emails saying they’d have to make other plans.
The emails told paddlers scheduled to pick up their permits at Kawishiwi Ranger Station in Ely and Gunflint Ranger Station in Grand Marais to schedule pick up from another, open ranger station or from commercial permit issue stations.

It was a winter that didn’t want to let go … and a spring that didn’t want grab hold and give us some decent weather. Finally, Easter weekend, the ice (finally) departed Lake Erie in the eastern basin of the lake off of Buffalo, N.Y.
Now the waters can begin to warm, and the spring fishing can explode. Well, kind of.
