Bait shortage continues to batter Minnesota’s fishing industry

Again, this year, many bait and tackle shops’ shiner supplies dried up early in the Minnesota ice-fishing season.
“It was kind of a rough winter. There wasn’t much for shiners after the end of January. I think the state, they could have sold another 5,000 gallons of shiners if they’d had them,” said Bill Powell, owner of Fred’s Bait & Tackle in Deer River.
Being in the industry for a long time, shortages aren’t anything new and have been getting worse for certain areas of Minnesota.

Commentary: ‘Corner-crossing’ ruling a huge victory for public land owners

In a huge victory for public land owners, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers on March 18 applauds the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit that affirmed the right to “corner-cross” to access public lands. The ruling marks a pivotal decision that cements the legality of public access to millions of acres of public lands in the West.

Outdoor Observations: Close call serves as reminder to protect dogs from common household dangers

With a full head of steam, I was putting on the finishing touches of this edition of Michigan Outdoor News when I realized my 3-year-old German shorthaired pointer, Scout, was stirring up quite a commotion.
I work from a home office on the lower level of my home and he was in the kitchen upstairs – a room he knows he’s forbidden from visiting. He and my wife, Jenny, apparently were tussling over possession of a bag of organic cacao powder.

Road-hunting debated as bill to expand safety zone fails in South Dakota

A bill that sought to expand South Dakota’s hunting safety zone from 660 feet to 1,000 feet failed in the state Senate on a 29-5 vote this year in Pierre. That’s despite the bill passing the House 51-19 before the distance was amended down from 1,320 feet.
“I think this is one of the first shots toward getting rid of road hunting,” said state Sen. Larry Zikmund, a Sioux Falls Republican.
The bill aimed to increase the buffer distance where hunting and trapping are restricted.

Tom Venesky: Fishing line not properly discarded has deadly consequences

The warnings are timely.
Every spring the Pennsylvania Game Commission sends out an advisory cautioning people against picking up or disturbing young wildlife. In the fall, when bucks begin to display rutting activity and deer movement increases, the agency send out another release reminding motorists to be on the lookout. Perhaps another warning needs to be issued – once before the start of trout season and again in June when bass season opens.

These three overlooked fly patterns have earned their respect on the water

During a long winter, most of Pennsylvania’s fly-fishers dreamt about big trout devouring their favorite flies. Many popular nymphs, streamers, egg patterns, worm patterns and dry flies were purchased or tied during the long wait.
Unfortunately, a few extremely productive imitations will be absent from most fly-boxes. In recent years, I was introduced to three obscure flies that earned some space in my fly-boxes.
