Springtime fishing heating up on Mississippi’s Pool 4 in Minnesota, Wisconsin

Every spring, anglers congregate on Pool 4 of the Mississippi River near Red Wing, Minn., to ply its waters before the inland waters walleye season opens and to have a chance to catch a monster fish. This spring, so far, is no different, thanks to decent early-spring weather and stable, if low, river conditions.

Bob Gwizdz: What’s all the excitement about ice fishing?

Back in the day, when I was a full-time outdoor scribe and was out there as many days as not, I used to joke that ice fishing was the price I had to pay to have my job the rest of the year.
It wasn’t because I don’t like it, but of my top 10 outdoor pastimes, ice fishing is No. 11. Part of what doesn’t especially excite me about ice fishing is that by mid-winter, you’re not really outdoors anymore, you’re in a shack or a tent.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania land exchange deal doesn’t quite pass the smell test

Avoid these mistakes after opening weekend of the Pennsylvania trout season

Pennsylvania’s opening day of trout season brings with it lots of anglers who are full of anticipation. They set up at known hotspots, which are usually the places that the fish were dumped into the streams, with hopes of catching their share in short order.
After a few days of this kind of pressure, the fish react and become hard to catch. Anglers trying to use first-day tactics usually end up with few or any fish in their creels and mistakenly believe the stream is fished out – which is hardly ever the case.
