U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reopens public comment period for monarch butterfly Endangered Species Act listing proposal

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reopening the public comment period for a proposed rule to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
The proposed rule includes species-specific protections and flexibilities to encourage conservation of the butterfly under section 4(d) of the ESA. Ralph Loos: Boone and Crockett Club’s Big Game Awards an easy way to revisit hunting dreams

Like most everybody else who grew up a ruralist in the most rural part of rural Illinois, I spent a significant chunk of my childhood chasing rabbits and squirrels – all the while pretending I was chasing elk and grizzly bears.
A quirky imagination came in handy. As TV heroes go, far above the Six Million Dollar Man was Grizzly Adams, and I sort of remember dressing up like him and even occasionally sliding one of my mom’s butcher knives into my waistband – because it always seemed possible an angry mountain lion or hungry timber wolf might confront me from the coat closet.

Queechy Lake: Stocked trout, and plenty of largemouths in New York’s Columbia County

And the water quality and temperature – the lake has a maximum depth of 40 feet – allow some of the trout that survive the early-season fishing pressure to hold over. Reports of catching browns and rainbows on either side of the 20-inch mark are credible and fairly common.

Commentary: Concealed ed carry renewal is the N.Y. gun owner’s responsibility

It use to be that a concealed carry permit was issued for the life of the recipient, unless revoked. Then New York State felt the need for a five-year re-certification of pistol permits for all the law-abiding concealed carry gun owners and the permits they held.
The theory behind it was to reduce crime. Following passage of the Concealed Carry Improvement Act in 2022, the re-certification process has been moved up to every three (3) years. It is amazing how many New York State concealed carry pistol permit holders are not aware of this regulation.
