Minnesota’s Little Jessie Lake in Itasca County is worth the stop for smallmouth

There are a lot of lakes in Itasca County, so a system such as Little Jessie Lake near Deer River often gets lost in the shuffle. But the lack of angler attention to Little Jessie can be an angler’s advantage, especially if you’re one of those folks who simply likes to catch something – just get bites on a given outing – and not be surrounded by lots of other anglers while doing it.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: ’Tis the season for re-spooling with braid

While monofilament line still has its place, I haven’t found any applications on spinning tackle that couldn’t be effectively accomplished with a braided main line and a fluorocarbon leader. Braided line mitigates twist, has no memory, has better sensitivity, casts farther, and can last many seasons.

Outdoor Insights: ‘Accounting error’ means a 4% decline in available dollars for habitat work in Minnesota

Being a public watchdog sometimes means sitting through boring legislative hearings and wading through long reports, then summarizing them for readers.

Like this past Sunday evening, when I spent time perusing the thrilling, 102-page February 2025 Budget and Economic Forecast from the Minnesota Management and Budget office. The report arrived last week, and tucked into the bottom of Page 47 was a cold sentence that only a CPA could love.

Lynx spotted in residential ‘dog pen’ near Minnesota’s Grand Marais

Out of seemingly nowhere, Sarah Hamilton, owner of Trail Center Lodge on Poplar Lake in Grand Marais, Minn., locked her eyes on a Canadian lynx prowling in the dog pen outside her window.
“It’s wonderful to see (a lynx) any time. Any time. We do see them from time to time, but it’s not that common,” Hamilton said.
While she said she’d seen a lynx before, she hadn’t seen one that big, comparing it to her 100-pound, 10-month-old rottweiler.

Ben Moyer: Trip from Pennsylvania to Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods worth the miles to extend ice-fishing season

My wife’s observation summed it up. “Do you realize you are going in the opposite direction of 99% of people traveling this time of year?”
“Uh, yep!”
That exchange followed a disclosure that my friends and I hadn’t had enough ice-fishing during the two-week window of safe ice we’d enjoyed in mid-January, the longest span to grace southern Pennsylvania waters in several winters, and that friend Eugene Gordon and I were headed to Lake of the Woods, Minnesota.

Mike Schoonveld: Here are some undeniable truths about fluorocarbon line

The first time I attached a short fluorocarbon (FC) leader to the end of the nylon monofilament spooled on my reel was more than 25 years ago. I’ll admit, I was skeptical. The hype I’d read about fluorocarbon seemed to imply that fishing with it could be an almost magical experience.
The advertising indicated fluorocarbon line was less visible to fish than clear monofilament line. I couldn’t see any difference – could the fish? Did it really make much difference to the fish?

Agencies studying fish movement on Ohio’s Great Miami River

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Miami Conservancy District (MCD), the Ohio DNR, and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA), combined resources in a cooperative effort to assess fish movement through the Taylorsville Dam in the Great Miami River.
The agencies began a tagging study to see if the dam inhibits fish movement. Data collection is planned for approximately one year. Compilation of results will begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
