Wisconsin DNR announces necropsy results for snowy owl found dead in New Glarus

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on Wednesday announced the necropsy results for a snowy owl recently found deceased in New Glarus.
When the owl was found dead on Feb. 5, 2025 in New Glarus, there were no apparent signs of the cause of death. A DNR conservation warden collected the carcass so that it could be submitted to the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison for necropsy and diagnostic testing.

The Minnesota DNR has scheduled a public hearing for people to learn more about and comment on a proposed addendum to the management plan for Lake Ocheda, located in Nobles County in southwestern Minnesota, that would allow extended drawdowns of the lake’s water levels.

Minnesota House bill offers exception for cervidae importation for zoos, raising CWD-related concerns

A bill amendment aims to make an exception to a current law that prevents the importation of cervidae into Minnesota from a state with a positive CWD test in the past five years.
H.F. 434 would open the door to allow zoos in Minnesota, accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and other USDA-licensed facilities, to import cervidae from verified zoos in other states.

DNR postpones elk research project in northwest Minnesota

Kicking off the new year in a new job with the Minnesota DNR, Amanda McGraw, the agency’s deer, moose, and elk scientist, has settled into a role that combines some of her greatest interests into a single job.
“It allows me to continue pursuing those passions for researching our large ungulate species like moose and deer and elk within the state. That’s what made it a once in a lifetime for me,” McGraw said.
This month, McGraw and her team had planned to begin collaring elk in the northwestern corner of Minnesota to gather more data on the herd’s population dynamics. However, that research project will be delayed from starting until next winter – 2025-26.

Commentary: It’s time to issue more bear licenses in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources claims it needs to raise the cost of hunting and fishing licenses because the number of hunters is declining, which is not entirely true.
The number of deer hunters is declining, but the number of bear hunters is increasing and so are bear numbers in the Upper Peninsula because the DNR is selling too few bear licenses.

Big bucks keeping certified scorers busy around Pennsylvania

Bob D’Angelo estimates he has measured more than 300 sets of antlers since he became the coordinator of the Pennsylvania Big Game Scoring Program in 2008.
In the next few months, D’Angelo will be adding to the total. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will hold big game scoring sessions in several regions across the state. The events are an opportunity for hunters to get their deer and elk racks, or bear skulls, measured and, if they qualify, entered into the record book.
