Ohio wildlife center taking bird flu precautions with new quarantine facility

A 15-foot by 21-foot quarantine triage complex may not strike one as being filled with creaturely comforts, yet when one is dealing with birds, bunnies, and bobcats, such a center is expected to meet the demands of treating injured and ill wildlife.
Plus, the complex and equipment will cost Lake County’s Lake Metroparks system in Ohio only $100,000, and the project will prove a lifesaver for wildlife. And the structure will help ensure the safety of the agency’s Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center employees.

Ohio Insider: Get Kidz Hooked program is introducing hundreds of kids to fishing in fourth year

Solomon Curtis was once one of the kids that he is so desperately trying to reach today through an innovative fishing program in Ohio.
“Four years ago, I told my wife that I wanted to do something in the outdoors for kids,” Curtis said recently. “Growing up, I knew that my purpose here in life was to serve and to help children. Within my (professional) career, I’ve always helped kids. But, I’ve always been passionate about fishing, too. So, I knew my purpose and my passion for fishing and I thought why don’t I combine the two by serving kids, but in the outdoors.”

Bob Gwizdz: Are walleye slot limits on the horizon for some Upper Peninsula waters?

Catch-and-release fishing these days is pretty much the province of bass anglers, trout fishermen, and muskie aficionados, but it’s quickly becoming important to walleye fishermen, too.
Think not? Well, the droves of guys who are plying the hard water of the Saginaw River in Michigan this winter may not have gone there specifically to catch and release walleyes, but they’re doing it.

Diamond darter restoration a focused priority for Ohio DNR

In a recent note from Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker noting her agency’s 2024 accomplishments and 2025 initiatives, it includes as one of their “Focus Initiatives” as “diamond darter repatriation.”
The draft recovery plan for the Ohio-extirpated diamond darter that was completed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) identifies establishing new populations in currently unoccupied historical habitats as a critical component of the future survival of this species.
