COVID-19 work stoppage gave rise to invasive sea lampreys in Great Lakes

A newly released report says that sea lampreys exceeded abundance targets for 2024 in all five Great Lakes.
The findings weren’t all that surprising, however, as the reason is well understood and the coming years will likely see levels of the destructive, invasive fish at or above goals. The status of sea lampreys in the region was the focus of a recent report by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.

2024 a good year for New York bear hunters in both zones

Black bear hunters in New York harvested an estimated 1,685 bears during the 2024 hunting seasons, according to the New State Department of Environmental Conservation’s recently released 2024 Bear Harvest Summary report.
DEC said the  harvest figures are 24% higher than 2023 and approximately 13% higher than the five- and 10-year averages.
“New York’s healthy bear population continues to provide excellent hunting opportunities.”

Pennsylvania Rep. Dave Maloney hosting listening sessions for hunters, anglers

State Rep. Dave Maloney believes the voice of sportsmen and women isn’t being heard by state game and fish agencies, so he’s embarking on a tour across Pennsylvania to hear from them directly.
Maloney, R-Berks County, Republican chairman of the House Game and Fisheries Committee, will hold a listening tour to discuss hunting and fishing issues in every region of the state. The first stop was Feb. 27 in New Holland, Lancaster County, followed by a trip westward for a March 12 session at the Sigel Sportsman’s Club in Jefferson County.

Commentary: Time to adjust regs on transferring a mentor’s antlerless tags in Pennsylvania

I read with interest Ben Moyer’s recent column about tags being transferred (or “sacrificed,” as he worded it) to a mentored youngster. I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be recruiting more hunters to the sport, and I believe the Pennsylvania Game Commission could help us do that by changing regulations surrounding the transfer of tags to new hunters.
