New York DEC advises public of hazardous conditions in the Adirondacks and Catskills

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is advising visitors to the Adirondacks and Catskills of unsafe winter conditions in the backcountry due to this week’s fluctuating weather. Warmer temperatures will create hazardous conditions with rapidly melting snow and ice. There is also possible avalanche danger in parts of the Adirondacks.

Good hunting anticipated for Michigan’s spring turkey season

Spring gobbler hunters can expect another good season with stable turkey numbers across most of Michigan.
The harvest report for the 2024 season was not available from the DNR at press time. However in 2023, 74,244 hunters killed an estimated 33,925 bearded turkeys during the spring hunt. Biologists expect that last year’s numbers were similar.

Minnesota graduate student is unraveling the mysteries surrounding bowfins

A vast smorgasbord of fishy options is available to Minnesota’s anglers, but most of the state’s fishermen and women concentrate on a handful of species when they head to the water.
For many, the walleye is at the top of the list, but crappies, bass, sunfish, pike, muskies, catfish, trout, and a few others receive attention during certain times of the year. One species oft scorned by Minnesota anglers is the bowfin (dogfish). Categorized by state officials as a native rough fish and for which no fishing regulations apply, anglers may treat the fish as they wish.

How do you get proficient shooting a handgun? Fit, grip and trigger control all play a role

Learning to shoot a handgun accurately is generally more challenging than becoming proficient with a rifle or shotgun. Whether it’s a micro compact pistol, full-sized semi-automatic or revolver, handguns are short, are usually designed to have heavier trigger pulls, and are inherently subject to more human-produced error due, in part, to having shorter barrels and sighting planes.
