Under proposals, Ohio’s archery deer season would begin Sept. 27

The 2025-26 Ohio hunting and trapping season dates that begin in the fall of this year were proposed to the Ohio Wildlife Council on Wednesday, Feb. 19, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Both white-tailed deer and waterfowl seasons were included in these proposals.

Minnesota DNR to assess limit for perch on Mille Lacs after harvest tops quota

When the DNR received the latest Lake Mille Lacs creel survey data, it became evident that state anglers have taken more yellow perch than the allowed harvest limit for the year. As a result, the agency has begun examining how to proceed with perch bag limits for the remainder of the season rather than closing it entirely.
“We take our safe harvest level very seriously. I really want to make sure that people understand that. But we’re in new territory with perch here,” said Brad Parsons, DNR fisheries chief.

James Lindner: Catfish and whitefish are great options on late ice

Although game-fish seasons are closed across much of the Ice Belt, there are still plenty of opportunities left for ice fishing. Panfish, including crappies, bluegills, and perch, certainly receive the lion’s share of fishing pressure during this period. That being said, there’s a number of other species, including some particularly fun fish, that are far underutilized by ice anglers. Two of my favorites are catfish and whitefish.

Glenn Sapir: There was something special about a New York trout opener

I’ll admit that black bass are my favorite freshwater fish to pursue. It wasn’t always like that. At one time, stream trout fishing was tops on my list, and it was about now, in early March, that the anticipation would start to effervesce.
I would take out my tackle that had sat dormant since the previous autumn. If I were conscientious, I’d change the line on my spinning reels and inventory my terminal tackle. When I graduated to fly fishing, I would take similar care and accounting of my tackle, cleaning lines, checking on accessories and inventorying my collection of flies.

Deer management strategies likely to be altered in northeast Pennsylvania after new CWD cases

The first positive cases of chronic wasting disease in Carbon and Luzerne counties will bring significant changes to deer management in the region, including a new disease management area, enhanced surveillance and, possibly, the use of sharpshooters.
During an informational meeting at Penn State-Hazleton held by the Pennsylvania Game Commission on Feb. 27, a packed house turned out to hear what the agency has found, and what’s next.

A day behind a beagle hunting bunnies is hard to beat

“This is kind of a gentleman’s hunt,” said houndsman Mark Beres, a grin spanning ear-to-ear. “Though no one ever accused me of being a gentleman.”
It’s a crisp February day at Walking Iron County Park in Mazomanie, Wis. Weightless “sugar snow” scattered at the slightest hint of a breeze, so tracking conditions were difficult and most of the rabbits hunkered down under heavy cover. But Ditto, Margo, and Happy, a stout trio of beagles owned by Beres, were thoroughly undaunted. Hour-after-hour, they worked the brush.
