Although small-game hunting seasons are still winding down in New York, the State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a hunter safety preliminary report, which, thus far, rates the 2024-25 seasons as the second safest on record.
DEC recently released its report documenting hunting-related shooting incidents (HRSIs) and tree stand/elevated hunting incidents and the agency said the numbers are consistent with the low incident rates observed across the state in recent years. A DEC press release said 11 HRSIs were documented in 2024, including four two-party firearm incidents and seven self-inflicted incidents.

I worry about what the future holds for the outdoors and natural resources that are protected by hunters, fishermen and trappers year after year. As my generation gets older, will there be new blood infused into the stewardship necessary to protect, enhance and conserve the forests and waters of our great country?
It seems that whenever I question that, someone comes along that renews my faith in today’s youth movement. Logan Noon, a 15-year-old freshman at Newfane Central High School in New York, is an amazing kid. He started fishing at the age of 2. Like a snowball rolling north from the escarpment, his fishing passion has grown with each passing year.
Hunters and anglers have good reason to watch South Dakota’s Capitol as the state’s annual bill-making session continues.
One bill would require outdoor licenses and fees to be managed by state lawmakers, and another would double the shooting safety zone around livestock and occupied buildings. Meanwhile, a few bills supported by sportsmen’s groups have already failed.

Good news for wildlife will emerge from the ground this spring.
It doesn’t happen often, but when it does the benefits are immediate for some, and long-lasting for others. Through much of the southern half of Pennsylvania, cicadas from Brood XIV are set to emerge from the 17-year slumber, and for a couple of months it will be a smorgasbord for wildlife.

On Thursday, Feb 20, the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee forwarded two bills that would modify fishing licenses prices for people 65 and older.
H.F. 276 and H.F. 411, respectively authored by Rep. Jim Nash, R-Waconia, and Rep. Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, were received by the committee moderately well, with minimal discussion on them. However, even though DNR officials say they support the sentiment of the bills, the fiscal bottom line is a bit more challenging to get behind.
