Michigan Reader Stories: Father, son share emotional elk hunt that at one point didn’t seem possible

We started into the pines moving slowly through the deep snow. The bulls were already in the woods on the opposite side headed to bed down.
This stalk was different than any other I had been on. The hunter (my son) walking behind me did things at his pace, in his own unique style. If you would have asked me 22 years ago when Alex came into the world if I would one day be stalking bull elk with him, I would have just stared at you in disbelief. You see, Alex was born with Down syndrome.

Habitat projects aim to improve Driftless Region grouse numbers in Wisconsin

Hunters who remember the ruffed grouse heydays of the 1970s and 1980s in the Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin may be scratching their heads, wondering what happened. Today, grouse are few and far between in that region, and most hunters venture north if they’re looking for a few partridge.
“Unfortunately, the Driftless Region is kind of the opposite of a conservation success story when it comes to grouse,” said Alaina Roth, Wisconsin DNR ruffed grouse specialist.

Habitat vs. renewable energy: What can be done to lessen the impact on wildlife?

In 2024, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) counted just 288 male prairie chickens on 37 leks, or breeding sites, in the state. All were on state-owned properties in central Wisconsin, with 73% of the birds on the Buena Vista State Wildlife Area.
On Jan. 16, 2025, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin issued a final decision approving plans for the state’s largest solar farm, a 10-square-mile behemoth, directly adjacent to the wildlife area.

Three truths about training your dog to find shed antlers

The shed-dog craze seems to have slowed down some in recent years. For a while, it was a hot topic in the dog and deer world, and for good reason.

At least for dog lovers, any activity where you can include your four-legged sidekick will be made better by its presence. In the case of shed-hunting dogs, their presence also can add to the bone total. Training a dog to find sheds is not as simple as it sounds, often because we don’t quite understand what finding antlers means to our dogs.
