Winter Asian carp netting effort comes up empty on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi

After a team of commercial fishers spent the morning punching holes in the ice, feeding a seine through the holes, and using various sounds to drive fish toward the net, the Asian carp they hoped to net were no-shows.
Despite knowing there’s a school of Asian carp holed up for the winter under the ice of the Mississippi River east of Winona, Minn., commercial fisherman Tim Adams and his team couldn’t drum them up the direction they wanted on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
“Even with driving techniques, sometimes the fish will not move toward the net.”

Backyard and Beyond: Look, listen for owls

Owls can be easier to spot in wintertime: great horned owls start hooting and nesting while we’re still in winter’s grip, and barred owls aren’t far behind. And an elusive screech owl may turn up at the entrance to tree cavity, soaking up the sun on a cold day.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Presentation is the key on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs

With a tougher bite on Mille Lacs, an angler’s presentation becomes more important. What’s been working best for us is a two-pronged attack. Setlines are always a go-to on Mille Lacs. Simple is best: a split shot on a plain hook, nothing fancy. Minnow choice is important.

Steve Carney: Ice anglers should be using chartplotters

There is no way I would access a lake without my chartplotter. I remove the chartplotter from my boat in the autumn and install it on my ATV with a heavy-duty ball mount, plug in a 12 volt cord, and I’m good to go.
The chartplotter is an important safety item, especially when you’re heading onto a lake and, more importantly, when you’re returning back to the access. Here are some reasons why this item truly can be a lifesaver.

Minnesota’s preliminary 2024 season report shows higher deer harvest

Minnesota hunters harvested more than 170,000 deer during the 2024 hunting season, up 7% statewide from the 2023 hunting season. The statewide harvest was 3% lower than the five-year average.
“We still have a way to go in parts of northern Minnesota,” said Todd Froberg, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources big game program coordinator. “But it seems like we’re moving in the right direction.”
