Waneta Lake offers a realistic shot at a big muskie in New York’s Schuyler County

It’s rare to talk about Waneta Lake without also mentioning Lamoka Lake, since the two are strikingly similar and connected by a canal of less than a mile that flows through the state-owned Waneta-Lamoka Wildlife Management Area.
But make no mistake: either of the Schuyler County lakes can stand alone as a fine fishery, as evidenced by DEC surveys that show 50,000 angler days annually.

Iced-in loons rescued on New York’s Adirondack waters

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation reported the successful rescue of three iced-in loons on Adirondack lakes around the Christmas holiday in late December.
Initial calls to the Adirondack Loon Center came in on Dec. 23 to report one iced-in loon on Paradox Lake, located in the town of Scrhoon, in Essex County, in the Eastern Adirondacks, and two iced-in loons on nearby Brant Lake, in Warren County.

Dan Ladd: Might there be a normal ice fishing season in New York?

I used to really be into winter. In fact, as soon as deer season was over, I would be breaking out the ice fishing gear, tuning up the cross-country skis and watching the weather forecast hoping for the snow and cold, all the while keeping in touch with my fishing and skiing partners as we awaited the arrival of winter conditions.
There hasn’t been too much of that in recent years, at least in my neck of the woods here in the Southeastern Adirondacks. However, there is snow in parts of New York, and as we’ve previously reported, some ice as well.

The local DNR fisheries team has monitored the Clam River Flowage for many years. Fisheries surveys were conducted in 1991, 1997, and 2012. Recent management activities have focused on sport angler regulations and fish surveys. Since 1997, no fish have been stocked into Clam River Flowage.
