Kinkaid Lake’s 50-incher tops 2024 muskie creel survey in Illinois

A 50-incher hooked by Richard Wren last May at Kinkaid Lake topped the list of fish on the 2024 Muskie Creel Survey results provided by DNR Fisheries Chief Mike McClelland.
Kinkaid dominated the list of muskies caught and reported last year, with a 48.5-incher and 47.5-incher also being caught at the southern Illinois lake. Lake Shelbyville and Mill Creek Lake were the only two lakes other than Kinkaid appearing in the Top 10 slots.

Minnesota DNR monitoring results of trapping changes

With a calendar date extension for the Minnesota otter season and geographic extension for bobcat and fisher harvest this winter, trappers were eager to take advantage of new opportunities, says DNR Research Biologist John Erb. Despite that, he suspects that harvest totals at the end of their seasons will be normal, and possibly lower.

Move to tip-downs to improve ice-fishing success

Tip-downs seem to be an under-utilized ice-fishing tool in Minnesota. But these passive fishing setups are dynamite for light-biting perch and crappies, and they can help you cover more water.
Perhaps the reason they haven’t caught on here is because ice anglers are allowed only two lines in Minnesota, compared with three lines in Wisconsin or four in North Dakota. Or maybe because winters here are too cold. Tip-downs work best when the temperature is above freezing. That said, you might consider adding them to your ice-fishing arsenal.

Vic Attardo: A few tips on taking full advantage of a good bite for bluegills

This year around Christmas, when a sudden frigid snap in Pennsylvania resulted in safe ice, feisty bluegills were most often caught. That’s typical of the first ice of the season. This season, the ‘gills seemed to prefer spikes over waxworms. Of course, how you deliver the creamy white larva is key, and there are a couple of options for bluegills.

Steve Griffin: The woodcock is a little bird that occupies a big part of my hunting heart

Three times the Michigan DNR’s wildlife division asked me in an email for my thoughts about woodcock. I’ll answer, but I wanted to review what I think about woodcock, first. And what I think is: It’s hard to think of anything so small that occupies such a big piece of my hunting heart.
The first gamebird I ever shot was a woodcock, a long-billed Midland County missile that posed a puzzle when it tumbled from the sky and seemed to disappear. It was my first time wrestling with game gone missing – probably hit, maybe dead, certainly now unfound and a burden on the conscience.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Numbers from fall turkey, holiday deer hunt are in

It looks like fall Wisconsin turkey hunters registered a preliminary number of 4,482 turkeys as of Jan. 2, according to the DNR’s web site.
That number might increase ever so slightly since the season didn’t close until Jan. 5. I’ve only participated in the fall turkey hunt a couple of times, with the limiting factor not being interest, but the fact that there are too many other hunting – and a few fishing – pursuits that draw my interest in the fall.

A lesson in the importance of eye protection for hunting, scouting

The winter of 2023-24 in Minnesota could not have unfolded any better for those who love to scout for whitetails.
The period of time with no snow on the ground and before green-up in the spring is a great time to be in the woods. Trail systems and the prior fall’s rut sign jump off the page and really show how deer use the terrain. I was determined to take advantage of this mostly snowless winter in southern and central Minnesota by getting into the woods every chance I got.
