Pheasant farm, gun ranges, crossbows garner some early attention as New York Legislature convenes in Albany

The New York State Legislature convened for the first time this year on Jan. 8, beginning a session that will continue through June 12. In the ensuing months, numerous legislative items will be proposed, debated and potentially voted upon. And, another state budget will also be proposed, debated and likely passed.
Along the way items of interest to New York’s sporting community are bound to surface. Coming into this year’s session sportsmen watchdog groups were on high alert. In some cases for sportsmen there is concern, and in others, hope.

Outdoor Insights: Important notes from Minnesota’s 2025 DNR Roundtable

The Minnesota DNR held its annual roundtable meetings event last Friday, Jan. 10, in Bloomington. It saw 400-plus attendees, and the agenda improved from recent years, although I would’ve liked to have seen one of the 16 small sessions focus on the state’s most important game animal, the white-tailed deer.

Jeff Frischkorn: More study needed on straight-walled cartridges’ impact on deer harvest in Ohio

There’s an adage in outdoor journalism that says never to argue with a biologist – even when you are correct.
I reminded myself of this axiom since the figures arrived for Ohio’s general firearms deer-hunting season and the two-day bonus firearms deer-hunting season. At the time, I should have realized what I was getting myself into when I suggested that – as Sherlock Holmes said: “Something is afoot.”

Minnesota DNR Roundtable includes discussion about elk and northeastern reintroduction

With the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa’s reintroduction of elk to northeastern Minnesota a year away, the DNR is continuing to monitor the health of the northwestern herd. Those animals likely will be the transplant subjects.
“The good news is that these animals are really very healthy,” DNR Wildlife Health Group Leader Michelle Carstensen said during a DNR Roundtable presentation before roughly 40 people on Friday, Jan. 10 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.

Bob Gwizdz: Michigan’s upland bird season was frustrating yet enjoyable

Anyone who has read these missives from my little corner of the world has probably picked up on my proclivity for participating on the last day of the season.
For instance, I always tried to go trout fishing on Sept. 30, even though most of my favorite streams are open to year-round angling in Michigan, even if the so-called “possession season” on brown trout ended that day.
