The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on Wednesday confirmed the first positive test result for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer in Chippewa County.
The deer was a hunter-harvested 1-year-old buck that was harvested within 10 miles of the Barron and Dunn County borders.

Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in Minnesota closes its doors in St. Paul

Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in St. Paul, a popular institution in metro-area fly-fishing circles that opened in Lake Elmo in the late 1970s, has closed its doors for good.
Thorne Bros. Custom Rod & Tackle in Blaine purchased the fly shop from owners Robert and Rhea Hawkins, according to a company announcement Jan. 2.
“Bob Mitchell’s name is synonymous with fly fishing in this region, and we’re honored to carry on that history and tradition in Blaine,” said Ben Olsen, co-owner of Thorne Bros., in an interview.

Culling to cease in parts of Minnesota’s southeast; how will that impact CWD prevalence rates?

While a chronic wasting disease predictive model is showing that prevalence of the disease could reach almost 15% in Minnesota’s Fillmore County whitetails by 2028, it’s too early to nail down its prevalence another five years down the line.
“I didn’t look too much further ahead. … The further out you go, the less reliable the predictions are, and that’s just the case with all modeling,” said Dr. Sergey Berg, assistant professor of computer and information science at the University of St. Thomas, and the designer of the CWD model.

Minnesota DNR details a midpoint review of state’s deer plan, public invited to weigh in

Minnesota’s management of white-tailed deer has marked some milestones though work remains before some goals are met, according to a Minnesota DNR midpoint review of the statewide deer plan.
The plan is in effect from 2018-2028. The midpoint review assesses progress toward goals, objectives, and strategies put forth in the 10-year plan, and includes 15 “performance metrics” and associated targets.

Gretchen Steele: Volunteering for conservation benefits everyone, everything involved

Outdoor adventurers, nature lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts of Illinois, 2025 is calling you to action. The trails we hike, the rivers we paddle, and the forests we explore owe their existence to ongoing conservation efforts.
This year, I challenge every outdoor user in Illinois to commit to at least one volunteer conservation act. Together, we can make a tangible impact on the places we love.
