Ohio DNR urges caution on the ice

Ohio’s natural wonders shine in the wintertime. However, as the temperatures drop, it is important to remember during those chilly adventures that “no ice is safe ice.” While frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers may be alluring to outdoor explorers, ice is never 100% safe and the Ohio DNR (ODNR) urges outdoor enthusiasts to stay alert.
“Winter recreation can be a thrilling experience, but it’s crucial for everyone to recognize that no ice can be considered completely safe,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said.

Snowy owl rescued from car grille by Minnesota woman who saved another owl hours earlier

Annabell Whelan woke up Tuesday and frantically checked on her holiday overnight guest — Nowl the snowy owl, who she rescued from the grille of a car the day before.
Whelan was out with her boyfriend’s family Monday in Duluth, Minnesota, when she saw the owl “just hanging out there, literally” after car and bird had collided, she told The Associated Press. The car’s owner had already called for help, but the animal rescue organization that the bird needed was closed — so Whelan stepped in, not for the first time that day.

Because I can actually remember what was for supper last night, I’ll take a shot at recounting some of my favorites – and some bonus annoyances – from the outdoors scene during 2024. It is, after all, almost 2025.

Pennsylvania bill would use fences around crops to stem ag damage, includes PGC cost-share funding

A bill being drafted by a Pennsylvania legislator would create a program to erect deer fencing around crops, and part of the cost would be paid by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
State Rep. Perry Stambaugh, R-New Bloomfield, is circulating a co-sponsorship memo for what he said is a long-term solution to the crop-damage issue. Stambaugh intends to introduce a bill in February that would create a 50/50 cost-share program between farmers and foresters and the Game Commission to erect wildlife-deterrent fencing to protect crops and forests from damage, mainly from deer.

Steve Sarley: Conspiracies go wild on missing turkeys from Illinois suburb

I’m going to continue with a story I am calling “The Case of the Missing Turkeys.” I began my mysterious tale in the last issue of Illinois Outdoor News.
I had written about how I had discovered a rather large number of wild turkeys living in the suburb of Wheaton. The birds seemed to be using Cantigny Park’s beautiful acreage as their home base. I had seen many birds in the park and in the areas close by.

If you’re looking to fill your buck tag before the archery season ends Dec. 31, you’re going to want to set up in a fresh stand, observe as much as you can, and then think about how close you really need them. There are few challenges greater than filling a tag with any late-season buck, but it can be done with the right strategy.

2024 survey results show second consecutive year of poor production of striped bass in New York’s Hudson River

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the 2024 Hudson River striped bass young-of-year survey results for 2024. They depict a second consecutive year of poor juvenile production in the Hudson River.
The index value, which provides an estimate of annual juvenile production for striped bass in the Hudson River, is generated through a beach seine survey at 13 sites in the lower Hudson River conducted bi-weekly from July to November.
