Wisconsin State Roundup: More crossbow hunters at least part of the reason for lower gun deer harvest in the north

Wisconsin Outdoor News editor Dean Bortz writes that he hears from license outlets that people who never bowhunted in the past are now buying crossbows and hunting in October and early November. (File photo by Ryan Rothstein)

There’s always a temptation to do some dissecting of deer harvest numbers and what those numbers might mean once we get a look at the preliminary gun deer harvest totals and those from the early archery and crossbow seasons.
For a good while now, many hunters in northern Wisconsin have lamented their lack of success in some areas during the gun deer season. While many DNR officials maintain the northern deer herd situation is not as dire as made out by hunters, most everyone agrees that if there is a difference from now compared to, oh, 15 or 16 years ago, we’re likely talking about multiple causations, not just one or two.
