Wisconsin State Roundup: More crossbow hunters at least part of the reason for lower gun deer harvest in the north

There’s always a temptation to do some dissecting of deer harvest numbers and what those numbers might mean once we get a look at the preliminary gun deer harvest totals and those from the early archery and crossbow seasons.
For a good while now, many hunters in northern Wisconsin have lamented their lack of success in some areas during the gun deer season. While many DNR officials maintain the northern deer herd situation is not as dire as made out by hunters, most everyone agrees that if there is a difference from now compared to, oh, 15 or 16 years ago, we’re likely talking about multiple causations, not just one or two.

Pheasant shortage scales back hunt in Illinois

Illinois pheasant hunters sensed something was awry in late November when Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area began scaling back the number of permits it issued for the Controlled Pheasant Hunting program.
Many guessed it had something to do with a shortage of birds. That assumption was confirmed on Dec. 4 when DNR announced a reduction in permits for the rest of the 2024 season, which means some northern Illinois sites will have reduced permits available.
