Here’s how to help your dog figure out the tough bird recoveries

Wounded birds can prove to be a recovery headache, and we often don’t make it easier on the dogs. Instead of marching in to where you think your downed bird landed, try to get a solid mark and then point your dog in from downwind. After that, give it time and don’t rush in. All that does is increase the pressure on your dog and introduce unnecessary scent to the scene. (Contributed photo)

It’s often mentioned in dog-training circles that an awful lot of dogs turn out just fine in spite of their owners. Good blood and exposure to birds can go a long way toward creating a dog that is a joy to hunt with, but we shouldn’t actively be working against that dog.
This might seem crazy, but that’s exactly what we do sometimes when we knock a bird down that isn’t quite ready to shed its mortal coil.
