Better in November and December? How to locate ruffed grouse in the late season

For the versatile hunter, October has much to offer – ducks, geese, bowhunting for deer. That’s the reason I tend to wait for late November and December to seriously hunt ruffed grouse.
December grouse hunts, though, bear little resemblance to October jaunts. Locating grouse during December can be difficult since the birds are usually concentrated in small areas. Once found they are often wary and flush wildly, making it difficult for a pointing dog, let alone for a hunter trudging through noisy, crusted snow.

Holiday Book Review 2024: A reading list for outdoor enthusiasts to help pass those long nights of winter

Each year for several months, the books pile up in corners of my office. Then in mid-November, when there’s nothing else going on except wrapping up muskie season, enjoying a pheasant hunt or two, bowhunting the rut, and getting ready for deer season, I cruise through the piles, stopping long enough to get the flavor of each volume so I can write this annual review.

Firearms safety instruction a multi-generational affair for this Minnesota family

For southern Minnesota’s Pelzel family, being a volunteer firearms safety instructor runs through their blood as it’s been a family norm passed down for three generations now.
“I would go with dad and grandpa to in-person classes when they were still held here, and I would just sit and listen, and I was always interested. I always told them that when I grew up, I was going to be an instructor, too,” said Alexa Pelzel, a recent high school graduate.

Oak Duke: Tactics for hunting a trickle rut

The call came in to my wife from one of her friends, “tell Oak there is a big buck in my front lawn, down by the woods, and it is just standing there, looking down at a little doe that is lying down! Is she hurt?”
“And what’s more,…” she added excitedly, “… is a little buck, 4-pointer, I think, that is walking around them!”
Lockdown. Ironic, but the same day as I was driving up to a hunting spot on a dirt road, there stood a nice 7-point buck staring off into space, transfixed.

Ryan Rothstein: A baby and a buck make for a Minnesota deer season like no other

Apologies for the cliché, because I think the phrase, “a season like no other,” gets tossed around too frequently. That said, I hope you’ll indulge me a story. The 2024 deer season has been as atypical as they come for yours truly.
To describe the full ride this year has taken me on, we need to step back to late March. You see, that was when my beautiful bride informed me that she was pregnant with our first child – with a due date in early November (insert your favorite joke about poor timing/family planning here).
