Nature Smart: Giving thanks for turkeys

Change in nature usually comes about in thousands or even millions of years, not in months or a few years. Quick and easy rarely has a place with Mother Nature. Everything moves deliberately, but make no mistake: Nature does change.
Here’s a change I personally have witnessed the past 40-plus years: the expansion of wild turkeys.

Ohio’s deer gun season gets underway Dec. 2-8

Ohio’s weeklong deer gun hunting season begins Monday, Dec. 2. The gun season traditionally begins the Monday after Thanksgiving, is open to all hunters, and runs until Sunday, Dec. 8. An additional deer gun weekend follows on Dec. 21-22.
Ohio’s first deer gun season was in 1943, and excitement has remained high for white-tailed deer hunting ever since.

LCCMR approves new study of wild animals for bird flu in Minnesota

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources has approved University of Minnesota researchers’ request to study how the current bird flu outbreak is spreading in wild birds and mammals in Minnesota.
“What we know right now, birds – and for first time in Minnesota history – wild mammals, as well as domestic mammals have been affected by this virus,” said the principal investigator of the study, Dr. Arno Wuenschmann, during the LCCMR meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Reader stories: ‘Still-hunting’ at 80

The title to this story is a play on words, still-hunting is walking slowly, quietly through woods.
As I approach my 80th birthday, I continue to get out of bed at 5 a.m. to still-hunt, missing only one year because of my tour of duty overseas.
In my early years, it seemed the entire family hunted. My grandparents had 12 children. Between the uncles and brothers-in-law, there would be anywhere between 10 to 12 rabbit hunters at Grandpap’s in Pinecroft, Pa., the first weekend.

Senator OK with Pennsylvania Game Commission spending changes

Earlier this year in the wake of an attempt by the state Senate to transfer $150 million out of the Pennsylvania Game Commission coffers, the head of the agency appeased legislators with a plan on how to spend the money.
With a change in leadership at the Game Commission, that plan has changed, and one senator feels it’s for the better.

A close look at Hornady’s new .22 ARC cartridge

My favorite coyote rifle is a Remington 700 Varmint Special chambered in .22-250. It is accurate and dependable, but it is also long and heavy. And as a bolt action, it’s not as practical when a pack of coyotes respond to my calls.
Except for certain applications, it stays in my gun safe when I head out calling. In most cases, my rifle of choice is an AR-15. It, too, is dependable, adaptable, adjustable, almost rust proof with its stainless barrel, amazingly accurate, semi-automatic, and – if set up carefully – tends to be lighter and more compact than the Remington Model 700.

Steve Sarley: Holiday angler or hunter, be thankful for the outdoors

Unless you are auditioning to be an Ebeneezer Scrooge imitator in a new local production of “A Christmas Carol,” you have to love the holidays. The only challenge is trying to figure out which is your favorite.
My son-in-law actually has the entire week of white-tailed deer season in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan off from work as a holiday week. Wild, isn’t it? Most people celebrate the more traditional holidays.
