Mild weather greets New York’s Southern Zone opening day deer hunters

The opening weekend of New York’s Southern Zone rifle season was a comfortable one for hunters in the southern tier, with daytime temperatures both Saturday and Sunday hovering in the 50s, and even approaching 60 degrees in parts of the state.
That likely kept hunters in the field, resulting in a number of success stories, including several sent to New York Outdoor News.

Wildfire claims life of New York State Parks worker

The drought that is plaguing Southeastern New York and bordering states and contributing to wildfires has claimed the life of a New York State Parks employee.
New York, meanwhile, remained under a statewide burn ban, which at press time was to be in effect through Nov. 30. The ban was issued in early November as firefighting crews in both New York and New Jersey worked to contain what has become known as the Jenning’s Creek Wildfire.

17,000 invasive axis deer were killed on Maui this year, but they just keep coming

About 50 axis deer crowded around the fence line separating Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Keopuolani Regional Park, startling the gardens staff on a recent Thursday afternoon.
The threat posed by the invasive deer was alarming because the gardens serve as a seed bank and are home to some of Hawaii’s rarest endemic and native plants.
“One night, with a herd like that, and a lot of our garden would be destroyed,” said executive director Tamara Sherrill.

Iowa’s busiest deer seasons are almost here

Iowa’s most popular deer hunting seasons are just around the corner, when roughly 100,000 hunters take to the timber for the long-awaited gun seasons.
Iowa’s first gun season is Dec. 7-11. Second gun season is Dec. 14-22. Last year, hunters reported around 60,000 deer during these two seasons, which is more than half of the total deer harvested for all seasons, and wildlife experts are forecasting a similar harvest.

Mike Raykovicz: In New York’s Southern Zone, consider taking a doe this year

According to information provided by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, last year hunters in New York harvested 209,781 deer. It was estimated that 112,224 antlered bucks, and 97,557 antlerless deer were taken and compared to the previous season. That’s a 3.6% decrease in antlered buck harvest statewide, and a steep 15.6% decrease in antlerless deer.
It’s interesting to note that nearly 70% of the bucks harvested last season were older deer, at least 2.5 years old, but despite the decrease in the total number of deer taken by hunters that’s nearly five times as many mature bucks than were harvested in 1969 when the agency first began monitoring the age structure of New York’s deer herd.
