Fall is a great time to target northeast Iowa’s trout streams

Fishing Iowa’s trout streams is a unique way to enjoy the cool fall weather and marvel at the amazing colors of Iowa’s prize trout. Male brown and brook trout display their brightest, most vibrant spawning colors this time of year.
Northeast Iowa is dotted with hundreds of miles of trout streams. From easily accessible streams in state or county parks, to those found in Iowa’s most wild and remote natural spaces, there are plenty of places to catch rainbow, brown and brook trout.

James Lindner: Trophy hunting for late open-water walleyes

Trophy walleyes – they’re a part of what keeps us ticking. The anticipation of that next big bite is a feeling rivaled by few others. Anyone who has targeted them knows just how special they are. But hunting for trophies isn’t for everyone.
Purposely targeting big walleyes requires a shift in mindset from conventional walleye angling.

Pennsylvania hunters asked to help monitor snowshoe hare populations

Hunters are being asked to help monitor snowshoe hare populations so the Pennsylvania Game Commission can gain a greater understanding of where hares exist on the landscape, and whether they are turning white in winter as expected.
Loss of suitable habitat, population fragmentation, and variable winter conditions where there is sometimes little snow threatens the species, which is now thought to be declining in Pennsylvania, and has again been listed as a species of greatest conservation need.

Some of continent’s largest black bears come from Pennsylvania

No other Pennsylvania hunting season offers such a potentially big payoff as this one.
Last year, hunters harvested 2,920 black bears across Pennsylvania, getting at least one in 58 of the state’s 67 counties and 20 of its 22 wildlife management units. They took seven in the early season, 695 in archery season, 541 in the muzzleloader and special firearms seasons, 1,086 in the regular firearms season, and 591 in the extended seasons. Some were massive, too.

Ohio wildlife officer’s quick thinking helped save child’s life after mowing accident

Quick thinking, proper training, and being “in the right place at the right time” recently earned wildlife officer Jesse Janosik a Valor Award from Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz.
Officer Janosik, who is assigned to Columbiana County, was on routine patrol north of Lisbon on July 18 this year when an alert from the sheriff’s office came over his radio that a child was severely injured in a mowing accident.

Rare native brook trout the subject of ongoing study in Ohio

Native brook trout have a place in Ohio’s fisheries history, though you’d be hard-pressed to find a brook trout in Ohio today.
According to the ODNR Division of Wildlife, brook trout were historically documented at the edge of their distribution in Ashtabula and Geauga counties. Noted Ohio fisheries researcher Milton Trautman wrote in 1981 that the headwaters of the Chagrin River historically appeared to contain suitable brook trout habitat. But, by 1945 that habitat had been destroyed.
