USFWS proposes recovery plan for imperiled mussels

They have quirky names and often are mistaken for stones, but freshwater mussels are very much alive and perform critical ecological functions in rivers and streams. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently published a recovery plan to save four imperiled mussels protected under the Endangered Species Act: the rayed bean, sheepnose, snuffbox, and spectaclecase.

Early, pre-opener license sales tick up from 2023 ahead of Minnesota’s firearm deer season

As hunters across Minnesota sight in their shotguns and rifles for the firearms deer opener on Saturday, Nov. 9, area wildlife managers across the state are projecting mixed conditions that could be favorable for some, and trickier in other areas.

The rationale was to give nearby deer time to forget about any noises that I made, allow my scent to dissipate, cool down from my walk, organize my equipment, and get quiet well ahead of legal shooting time.
