For these Minnesota deer campers, the focus is on the food

At 5 a.m. sharp on Thursday, Nov. 7, two days before the Minnesota firearms deer opener, Scott Doheny and three others will depart his New Prague home with a camper in tow for a spit of northwoods public land near Grand Rapids.
By roughly 1 p.m., and after eating breakfast at Merlin’s Family Restaurant in Princeton, they’ll crack a beer and toast another year of deer camp. Camp will already be set up. Portable deer stands, too. For Doheny, 56, and David Anderson, 49, of New Market, this year marks their 25th anniversary of hunting at the same location.

New York Reader Stories: New bucks appear throughout the autumn period

Like many hunters, I like trail cameras. I use them 24/7, 12 months of the year. I am also someone who keeps records, nothing crazy but one of the records I keep from trail camera pictures is on deer, not unlike most deer hunters who use trail cameras.
I used to try and determine the deer population on my property using buck, doe and fawn numbers to determine buck-to doe ratios and total population.

Dan Small: Lake of the Woods provides another memorable adventure

As I explored the Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods for the fourth time last month, I was pleased that some of the lake’s 14,000 islands and 65,000 miles of shoreline looked familiar, but I was happy to rely on our experienced guides for navigation and advice on where to fish.
Ballard’s Black Island Resort is the only camp on 36-acre Big Black Island, which lies some six miles as the gull flies north of Gill’s Marina near Morson, Ontario. The resort can handle up to 24 guests at a time, and our group of 17 nearly filled it.

Wisconsin’s gun deer season: How will late opener impact hunter success this year?

Predicting gun deer season success in Wisconsin this year may be much like nailing Jell-O to the wall. Last year saw a miserable season for hunters in the north. Some blamed predators, others the severe winter of 2022-23, and still others said loss of habitat had a hand in the mix. It is likely all three of those things were at play, especially in those northern regions.
Then comes along the almost non-winter of 2023-24.

Jeremiah Haas: Sportsmen provide much value to our communities

The American sportsman continues to be characterized with negative descriptions by some, being described as a gun-toting, blood-thirsty neanderthal hoping to shoot Bambi with a bazooka. Sadly, some people believe that.
However, the reality is that the American sportsman has been the driver for much of the wonderful resources we are fortunate to experience today.

Fall is the perfect time for catching bass with crankbaits

Climbing inside the “Way, Way Back Machine,” I remember a fall morning when my friend’s 25 horses wouldn’t turn over. He just couldn’t get them to crank.
No problem, I insisted, my engine will start right up. Let’s take my boat instead. We were both docked in a marina at the northern end of Pennsylvania’s Lake Wallenpaupack, practically side by side.
