Heavy rain has impact on 2024 fawn survival in south-central Minnesota study area

It’s well known that heavy rains can be tough on young pheasants and turkeys. But how does abundant precipitation affect fawn survival in the earliest stages of a whitetail’s life?
Minnesota researchers didn’t set out to answer that question exclusively, but they may have shed some light on the topic during some work this past spring. Researchers with the Minnesota DNR placed GPS collars on newborn fawns as part of a study in the south-central portion of the state for a fourth straight year in 2024.

Will Minnesota’s early teal season continue in 2025? Survey finds hunters still split

Results from the Minnesota DNR’s waterfowl-hunter survey for the 2023 season have been tallied. The focus of the survey leaned heavily on participation and attitudes surrounding the early teal season.
Respondents were essentially split on whether to continue with the early season, which ran for five days this year beginning Sept. 1. For those who did participate, satisfaction rates were high.

Minnesota elk hunters take eight for 10 during hunt

While about 4,000 prospective elk hunters applied to hunt the species in northwestern Minnesota this year, Kelsie LaSharr, the DNR’s elk coordinator, says she’s still surprised by how many in Minnesota aren’t aware of the limited once-in-a-lifetime elk licenses available.
Further, when she sees the animals harvested, LaSharr says she’s more than impressed by the quality of the animals in that part of the state. This year, eight of 10 elk permits were filled, all of them by bull elk.

Bill Thornley: An old hunter has seen it all – and it still looks good

Out in the hills an old hunter checks his treestand as September moves into October. The hunter feels a stir of excitement as he spots a nice buck along the trail. He hopes to spot the buck again in later November during the gun-deer season.
Memories of past hunts flood over him, visions of bucks missed and bucks tagged, of old friends hunted with and those who are no longer around to share the camaraderie found within the hunting shack.

Notes off a soiled cuff: 50 straight years of canoe trips for Pennsylvania’s Paul Misko an amazing tradition

Way back in August 1974, when Paul Misko started his 50-year unbroken string of annual canoe trips on the Juniata River, the Watergate scandal was peaking. U.S. President Richard Nixon announced his resignation and Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president. That was a different time, obviously.
When I met Misko in 1980, he owned a hole-in-the-wall bar-restaurant across the street from the Mirror newspaper building in downtown Altoona called the Eureka.
