Dan Ladd: Is another ammo shortage on the horizon?

For over four years now, stretching all the way back to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems like we’ve been consistently in an ammunition shortage in some form or another.
Not to mention the increased expense. As discussed in an article in the previous issue, things seem to have stabilized. But there’s some recent news that hunters, recreational shooters and especially reloaders may want to make note of.

Mike Raykovicz: Tips you should know for crossbow safety

I was at an archery Pro Shop recently and spent some time talking to the owner about business. He told me the sales of bows, arrows, and other archery related products were holding steady, but crossbows were just about flying out the door.
It appears New York hunters are embracing their use for good reason. According to the DEC, crossbows may be used to take bear during the early bear season, early muzzleloader season in the Northern Zone, regular firearms seasons in the Northern and Southern Zones, and the late muzzleloader season in the Southern Zone. Their appeal is also generated by the fact 12-year-olds may use them to hunt deer as well.

Gretchen Steele: It’s hunting season – time to think safety

With fall hunting seasons getting underway in Illinois, it’s more important than ever that all outdoor user groups share our public lands safely.
Whether it’s the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, USFWS, or the U.S. Forest Service, all agencies governing public land strongly encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to practice safety measures when afield during hunting seasons.

Steve Pollick: Re-outfitting a Remington 721 with great results

A long quest for a satisfactory “old-fashioned” big-game utility rifle – a mostly go-anywhere, do-anything classic piece – at last is over for me.
The rifle is a Remington 721 bolt-action, chambered in .30/06. It is not quite the rifle it was when it came out of the fabled Ilion, N.Y., factory in 1948, its first year of production and the year I was born. But it’s close, and I think, better.

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin DNR keeps ignoring CWD elephant in the room

One can’t help but smirk each autumn when the DNR issues its reminders and suggestions to hunters preparing for Wisconsin’s deer seasons.
A DNR press release on Sept. 12 advised: “Help Maintain a Healthy Herd: Avoid Baiting and Feeding Deer.”
Avoid? Perhaps the Wisconsin State Patrol should take the DNR’s lead and issue press releases that advise: “Help Reduce Motor-Vehicle Fatalities: Avoid driving 90 mph on two-lane highways, especially if you haven’t avoided heavy drinking the past three hours.”
