Black bear conflicts increase across New York this year

Mary Beth O’Hearn has lived in her home in the southern Washington County hamlet of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., for nearly 30 years, and she never had encounters with black bears until the last two summers.
“I’ve probably had them get into my garbage 10 times. I never had issues with bears before the last two years. We have had to put our trash bins in a shed,” O’Hearn said.
On July 11, less than a mile from her home, a bear broke into a home to raid a kitchen, resulting in it being put down by the NY State Department of Environmental Conversation.

Increased participation in Minnesota hunter observation survey helps DNR’s deer management

The Minnesota DNR has released its 2022 Minnesota Deer Hunter Observation Project Report, which shows a drastic increase in hunter participation from around the state, reinvigorating the value of the survey, officials say.
“This is designed to kind of be an annual thing that we do to help us with deer management. The goal is that this becomes a reliable index of the population that we can use, and I think we’re headed that way,” said Eric Michel, a DNR ungulate research scientist.

A 12-year-old boy fatally shoots a black bear mauling his father during a hunt in western Wisconsin

A 12-year-old boy shot and killed a wounded black bear as it was mauling his father near their hunting cabin in the thick western Wisconsin woods.
Ryan Beierman, 43, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that he was pinned beneath the 200-pound bruin on Sept. 6 when his son, Owen, fired a shot from the boy’s hunting rifle.
“Owen was a hero. He shot that bear and killed it on top of me,” said Beierman.

Minnesota’s bear harvest near 3,200 at the midway point

As bear-hunting season hits its halfway mark, the Minnesota DNR’s preliminary harvest total as of Monday stood at about 3,200 bears.
“But the pace has significantly slowed down, as far as harvest registration goes. We had in the first seven days about 2,500 bears, and over the last seven days, less than 200 bears registered,” said Dan Stark, the DNR’s large carnivore specialist.
