The Minnesota DNR recently released a new 30-minute documentary called “Kings in the North: Lake Sturgeon Recovery in the Red River Basin.”
The video tells the story of decades-long efforts by Minnesota DNR fisheries biologists and their partners to restore the lake sturgeon population in the Red River of the North and its tributaries, known as the Red River Basin.

Mankato artist Kurt Kegler has won the Minnesota waterfowl stamp contest with an acrylic painting of a cackling goose, a species that looks like a smaller version of a Canada goose.
Michael Sieve, of Rushford, earned second place with a cackling goose painting done in oil and acrylic. Third place went to Stephen Hamrick, of Lakeville, with a painting of a cackling goose done in acrylic.

Wil Goetsch caught a glimpse of the big bear on his trail cameras twice before seeing him emerge through rows of corn as he sat perched in his hunting stand.
“He came in upwind of me, to the north, and fixated right up on me in the stand, smelled for me. You could see him processing,” Goetsch said.
Goetsch, his bow drawn, let an arrow fly, hitting the bear.
“It wasn’t until I shot him that I realized how big he was.”

I caught my first and only lake sturgeon many years ago on the St. Croix River somewhere east of Rock Creek. To say I was smitten by the smallish 36-incher might be taking things a bit too far, but to say I was enamored certainly wouldn’t be a misnomer.

Diane Wantz, of Mentor, Ohio, is lucky. She’s been able to combine her passion for fly fishing and giving back to those men and women who have served in our Armed Forces.
Wantz is president of Patriots on the Fly, a new group in Ohio that describes itself as a “conduit to the world of fly fishing for disabled veterans.”
Wantz and her group of volunteers got to know one another through another national fly-fishing group and decided to branch off and form the non-profit Patriots on the Fly just for Ohio. The program began this May.
