Documentary highlights Minnesota’s Red River lake sturgeon recovery

The Minnesota DNR recently released a new 30-minute documentary called “Kings in the North: Lake Sturgeon Recovery in the Red River Basin.”
The video tells the story of decades-long efforts by Minnesota DNR fisheries biologists and their partners to restore the lake sturgeon population in the Red River of the North and its tributaries, known as the Red River Basin.

Mankato artist wins Minnesota waterfowl stamp contest

Mankato artist Kurt Kegler has won the Minnesota waterfowl stamp contest with an acrylic painting of a cackling goose, a species that looks like a smaller version of a Canada goose.
Michael Sieve, of Rushford, earned second place with a cackling goose painting done in oil and acrylic. Third place went to Stephen Hamrick, of Lakeville, with a painting of a cackling goose done in acrylic.

Prospects favorable as bird hunts arrive in Minnesota

Early-season wingshooting opportunities in Minnesota are nothing if not diverse. Big birds and small. Some migrate and others don’t. Some are found in the deep woods, while others cover prairie country. And, of course, some are thought to taste better than others.
The good news is that three species are open for business Saturday (Sept. 14) and another opens a week later.

With limited natural food, Minnesota’s bear hunt off to hot start

Wil Goetsch caught a glimpse of the big bear on his trail cameras twice before seeing him emerge through rows of corn as he sat perched in his hunting stand.
“He came in upwind of me, to the north, and fixated right up on me in the stand, smelled for me. You could see him processing,” Goetsch said.
Goetsch, his bow drawn, let an arrow fly, hitting the bear.
“It wasn’t until I shot him that I realized how big he was.”

Fly-fishing utilized as a means of providing for vets through Ohio’s Patriots on the Fly

Diane Wantz, of Mentor, Ohio, is lucky. She’s been able to combine her passion for fly fishing and giving back to those men and women who have served in our Armed Forces.
Wantz is president of Patriots on the Fly, a new group in Ohio that describes itself as a “conduit to the world of fly fishing for disabled veterans.”
Wantz and her group of volunteers got to know one another through another national fly-fishing group and decided to branch off and form the non-profit Patriots on the Fly just for Ohio. The program began this May.
