Ralph Loos: Some regulation changes Illinois hunters should know heading into 2024-25 seasons

We’ve been scooped by Illinois DNR’s new version of the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, which doesn’t bother me all that much, given that DNR’s top source for news is, well, DNR.
Like every other hunter in the state, I spend hours flipping through pages of the Digest – or clicking through pages of the Digest, as is more common in the world we now live in. Even simple things in the Digest entertain me, such as the section that shares definitions of common terms.

Channel catfish had highest PFAS count in Illinois rivers

Scientists from the University of Illinois tested nine fish species from four northern Illinois rivers for contamination with per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances –  synthetic chemicals found in many industrial and commercial products.
They found fish contaminated with PFAS in every one of their 15 test sites. Elevated levels of PFOS, one type of PFAS compound, were found in nearly all fish tested. The researchers focused on fish in northern Illinois rivers because they are close to urban and industrial areas.

Let’s take a look at these two openers that give many hunters their first shot of each season.

Gretchen Steele: Giant City State Park in Illinois introduces new trackchair to enhance trail accessibility

Giant City State Park near Makanda, Ill., is taking a significant step forward in making the outdoors more accessible to all. The park is excited to announce the addition of an Action Trackchair, a tool that opens up new possibilities for visitors with limited mobility.
If you’ve ever been to Giant City State Park, you know the beauty it holds — towering bluffs, lush forests, and winding trails that invite exploration. However, not all visitors have been able to fully experience these natural wonders, especially those who rely on wheelchairs or have other mobility challenges. That’s where the Action Trackchair comes in.
