Jeff Frischkorn: Ohio Division of Wildlife offers insight into methodology behind state’s controlled hunt draw process

Frequent Ohio Outdoor News contributing writer Larry Moore enjoyed my Aug. 16 story in the publication on the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s annual special hunt lottery.
While the story piqued Larry’s interest – having been selected two consecutive years for small-game hunts – he still had questions. These were related to the program’s operational aspects. The question intrigued me, as well. Enough so that I posed Larry’s inquiry to Brian Plasters, the wildlife division communication manager.

Steve Pollick: A good day had on the quiet waters of Ohio’s Lake LaSuAn

Scratching the fishing itch sometimes means stepping outside the usual routine and trying something different, so fishing buddy Steve Hathaway and I did just that recently – with very satisfying results.
Our usual angling haunts lie in western Lake Erie, home of renowned walleye and yellow perch angling. But a spate of fickle winds and weather had kept us pinned down at the dock too long, so we decided to venture into the extreme northwest corner of Ohio to the Lake LaSuAn State Wildlife Area and its cluster of 13 lakes and ponds.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Audit needed on DNR spending before a license fee increase is approved

Veteran reporter Tim Eisele, in this issue, dips a toe into the swirling mess that is the DNR’s budget situation. Despite the depth of Eisele’s reporting, we’re just barely scratching the surface of the DNR’s actual budget situation.
At the same time, Jeff Brown, our copy editor, attended the Aug. 13 meeting at the Arcadia Sportsmen’s Club on the DNR’s abrupt decision to discontinue the long-running co-op trout rearing program.

Wisconsin research indicates hunting, trapping has little impact on coyote populations

Coyotes are doing well in Wisconsin and throughout their range across the Continental U.S. and Canada. Despite liberal regulations, hunting and trapping don’t have any significant impact on coyote numbers.
These are two takeaways from a recent study conducted by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) scientists.

Summer Lake Ontario Counties Derby comes down to the final weekend in New York

In the summer version of the Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby, catches made the last weekend of the month-long-contest (held from June 29 to July 28) managed to produce three of the four species category winners.
It also produced the Grand Prize fish when Robert Vazquez, of Rochester, N.Y., reeled in a 27-pound, 12-ounce salmon on July 26.
