Fond du Lac County sheriff’s department, Wisconsin DNR working large deer poaching case

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources game wardens are asking for help in an investigation of a deer poaching scheme involving dozens of deer and covering almost 200 square miles in Fond du Lac, Washington, and Dodge counties.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt said the investigation started when a resident called the DNR.
“In mid-July we got a call of a strong odor coming from garbage at the neighbor’s house,” Waldschmidt said.

Illinois DNR to double number of bobcat permits for upcoming season

Trappers and hunters hoping to secure a bobcat permit for the upcoming season in Illinois have had their chances doubled.
Following the release of a much-anticipated study by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale indicating the state’s bobcat population would support increased harvest, DNR has upped the number of bobcat permits it distributes via lottery each fall from 1,000 to 2,000.

Volunteers from Wisconsin’s halted co-op trout rearing program have voices heard in meeting with DNR staff

They came to an open forum looking for answers as to why what seemed like a perfect marriage of a government program and the private sector – the long-running trout rearing co-op program – was abruptly ended.

Why, in late June, would the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cut a successful rearing/stocking program with 21 southwestern Wisconsin sportsmen’s clubs mid-stream? More than 50 people, many of them upset and frustrated with the lack of communication with the DNR, showed up at the Arcadia Sportsman’s Club Tuesday night, Aug. 13, to meet with DNR Fisheries Chief Justine Hasz and Dave Giehtbrock, DNR section chief for fisheries.

A new legislative committee eyeing sandhill crane hunt in Wisconsin

The latest attempt to create a Wisconsin sandhill crane season began Aug. 1 in Horicon at the inaugural meeting of the 2024 Legislative Council Study Committee on Sandhill Cranes.
One takeaway – a regulated hunt will not endanger the state’s sandhill crane population. Nor may a hunt reduce spring corn crop damage by cranes. Federal restrictions only allow a fall hunt. A fall hunt may help potato farmers discourage cranes from damaging crops.
