Patrick Durkin: Bluegills rival any fish in taste, fight

Few argue the bluegill would make a worthier state fish than the muskellunge, Wisconsin’s longtime holder of that title. Bluegills, after all, aren’t particular about where they live.
In ancient times, their likely range extended from the eastern half of the United States to southeastern Canada and northeastern Mexico. Their range expanded in recent centuries through intentional and unintentional transplants, spreading the species throughout the United States and northern Mexico.

Steve Piatt: It’s good to have a friend with a fishing boat

Terry Catlin was my friend even before I knew he owned a great fishing boat.
Actually, he owns two. But before that we were traveling turkey hunters, laughing and joking our way through a Kansas adventure that included a couple of Rio Grande longbeards as well as a middle-of-the-night knock on our hotel door from a Springfield, Missouri, police officer wondering why we had left open the door of our rental car – with our guns still safely cased inside.

Christine Thomas: kayaking into the middle of a muskie hunt

“It is 47.5 inches long. It is the biggest one I ever caught,” exclaimed the young man. “But I am going to tell everyone that it was 48 inches.” He laughed.
“I am going to tell everyone you are exaggerating,” I said, also laughing.
We were visiting our friends Tom and Kris Dew, whom you have met in many earlier columns. They have a lovely log home on a beautiful lake in the Hayward, Wis., area.

Outdoor Insights: Reflecting on deer hunting opportunities in Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge

Elsewhere in this edition of Outdoor News, you’ll see details on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pilot program that will pay hunters who choose not to use lead ammo on seven national wildlife refuges.

The USFWS last month confirmed it’s implementing the program this fall “to test voluntary, incentive-based efforts to increase the use of lead-free ammo by hunters on USFWS lands.” The plan doesn’t include any Minnesota refuges, but it does have a property near and dear to my heart just across the Mississippi River.
