August is salmon time on the Great Lakes, and especially in Michigan

A sarcastic grin comes to my face when I look at the August issue of a magazine that covers the Midwest or Great Lakes regions and it doesn’t have at least one story on salmon fishing. How can that be? August is the time for salmon fishing around the Great Lakes and especially Michigan.
Regardless of where you live in the state, August is when salmon begin schooling near sites where they were stocked years earlier or they begin homing in on rivers and streams where they were naturally reproduced. The opportunity to make big catches of mature salmon is never better.

Use summer to determine what deer rifle you want to use this fall

The week of regular gun season is the defining moment for your choice of a deer rifle.
You may not need to fire a shot to find how well it fits your needs. When my choice does not go as planned, I look for another. It often goes that way. Resale is disappointing, but buying another hunting implement, new or used, takes the pain away.
Shooting what your friends own can help inform your decision to buy, as can talking to a stranger at the range. If I see something that catches my eye, I ask them how they like it. I sometimes get an offer to shoot. I have met many helpful shooters who were tickled to talk about their guns.

Some parts of South Dakota not immune to effects of heavy rains on pheasants

A series of heavy rainfall events in late June are clouding the pheasant-production outlook in some areas of South Dakota, although wildlife experts remain largely optimistic about the kind of bird numbers upland hunters may see this fall.
Over a foot of rain fell on parts of southeastern South Dakota during the final week of June, causing significant flooding in both rural and urban areas. The effects of the flooding in this part of the state – roughly outlined by state Highways 34 and 19 – were most apparent in those grassy waterways that typically help usher normal runoff through fields of corn and soybeans.

Tips to make you a better walleye angler on Pennsylvania waters

To consistently catch walleyes, anglers must understand the characteristics of the particular body of water being fished. Many impoundments hold a decent number of these finicky fish in Pennsylvania, but often fishermen are unaware they inhabit the lake.
There are some legitimate reasons the anglers are oblivious, though a little research with area bait shops, residents, or the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission could enlighten them.

Minnesota DNR wildlife manager Randy Prachar calls it a career after 36 years

Randy Prachar, the Minnesota DNR’s Roseau River Wildlife Management Area wildlife supervisor, retired July 5.
Prachar spent 36 years with the DNR in various positions, always living his dream of working outdoors and with wildlife.
“I decided to go for wildlife management,” Prachar said. “That, I would say, was the dream from when I was a small boy. And jumping quite a bit ahead now, I’ve lived the dream.”
